Job Prospects for Arboriculture and Forestry
The work of a Tree Surgeon, also known as an Arborist to use the official term, is varied, rewarding and extremely important to life on our planet. Tree Surgeons look after the health of trees and shrubs, and ultimately ensure they are well maintained and safe for members of the public and the wider environment. Here’s our guide to the jobs and salaries available in the industry.
Job Opportunities
There are a wide range of job opportunities in the Arboriculture and Forestry industry. These roles namely fall within four different categories. Lots of Tree Surgeons operate as self-employed contractors – whether that’s a chainsaw and felling expert, general ground worker or specialist climber. There is also a demand for more experienced Tree Surgeons to work as private consultants. Local Authorities generally employ surveyors or tree planning officers. And last, but not least, is teaching and assessing – such as at our well-established DTE Academy.
Salary Expectations
People just starting out, or operating as practical Tree Surgeons and contractors, can expect to earn between £15,000 and £22,000. This can all depend on the hours put in, especially for those working as self-employed Arborists. Planning officers and specialist or skilled Tree Surgeons can expect salaries of up to £30,000. Meanwhile, consultants, lecturers and assessors can earn up to and beyond £40,000 a year.
Qualification Requirements
Here's the good news – you don't need a specific degree to operate as a Tree Surgeon. However, a degree-level qualification in relevant fields – such as forestry, arboriculture or similar – will help you with career prospects and advancement.
Without a degree, you may be required to complete one or more City & Guilds qualifications and gain relevant experience if you want to progress in the industry.
Let’s not forget – you will also need a taste for heights and working in the great outdoors. This is primarily the case if you’re operating as a contractor!
